So far 50,000+ people have signed up for the ride, but why have they done this?
Well, there's the obvious point that somewhere in amongst the information shared will be information that participants will benefit from, each taking from it what best suits their needs. Some may regard participation as a refreshing activity, perhaps stimulating intellectual interest in a new direction. There will be a whole host of other reasons.
I like the insights from Prof Dr Hobohm, one of the course faculty, which could be paraphrased as:
Writing is a liberation of memory and storytelling is rediscovering the person as a transfer of knowledge.
A story created by 50,000+ people? A library of living books? It could be argued that not since the mass printing presses of the industrial revolution pumped out novels to the newly literate has there been such a democratisation of storytelling.
That is why I have joined the Storytelling MOOCers - to see where this ride goes. Let's see what happens.
